More Than Just Adding Iron-On Backing

Many people think PVC patches cannot be ironed on, or that they will not stick properly or may be damaged by heat. In most cases, these issues come from unsuitable materials or incorrect heat press settings.

At Raybay, we have over 10 years of experience producing iron-on PVC patches. We help you choose the right backing and provide clear application guidance based on your fabric type, so the patches can bond more securely and safely.

Strong Heat Seal Backing

The backing solution is selected based on your patch size, thickness, shape, 2D or 3D design, and intended fabric.

Heat Press Application Guidance

We can provide heat press guidance based on your project, including recommended temperature, pressure, pressing time, cooling time, and whether the patch should be pressed from the back side.

Sample Test Before Bulk Orders

For bulk iron-on PVC patch orders, we recommend sample testing before mass production. This allows you to check the actual adhesion, appearance, edge stability, fabric compatibility and washing performance before approving the full order.

Alternative Backing Options

If your material is not suitable for heat press application, we can recommend other backing options such as Velcro, sew-on backing, adhesive backing, no backing

About Heat Press PVC patch

When Iron-On May Not Work

Iron-on backing is a convenient option, but it may not suit all materials.

We recommend testing first or considering Velcro, sew-on, or other backing options for:

  • Waterproof or DWR fabrics
  • Gore-Tex or coated materials
  • Cordura nylon
  • Leather
  • Very thin or heat-sensitive fabrics
  • Rough or coated surfaces
  • Outdoor, tactical gear, hard cases, helmets

These materials may not bond well or may not withstand heat press conditions.

Iron-on is still possible in some cases, but results depend on fabric type, temperature, pressure, and pressing time, so testing before bulk production is important.

If you’re unsure, share your product details and we’ll help you choose the right backing.

How to iron on pvc patches?

  1. Pre-press the fabric for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  2. Place the PVC patch in position with the iron-on backing facing the fabric.
  3. Cover with a Teflon sheet or protective cloth.
  4. Heat press at 150–160°C / 300–320°F for 15–25 seconds with medium to firm pressure.
  5. Press from the back side when possible to reduce direct heat on the PVC surface.
  6. Let the patch cool completely before checking the edges and adhesion.
  7. Test washing performance before applying patches in bulk.

Please note: these are general starting settings. The final temperature, pressure, and time should be adjusted based on patch thickness, backing type, fabric type, and test results.

FAQ

Yes. PVC patches can be made with iron-on backing, but they require the right hot-melt backing, suitable fabric, and controlled heat press settings. Please share your project details and we will provide a solution.

Iron-on PVC patches can provide good adhesion when applied correctly, but sew-on patches are usually more secure for heavy use, outdoor gear, tactical products, or materials that are difficult to bond. We can recommend the best backing type based on your usage.

A home iron can be used for small q’t’y, but we recommend using a heat press for bulk application. A heat press provides more stable temperature, pressure, and timing, which helps improve bonding consistency.

A general starting range is 150–160°C / 300–320°F for 15–25 seconds with medium to firm pressure, around 40–60 PSI. The final setting should be tested based on the PVC patch thickness, backing type, fabric, and application method.

Iron-on PVC patches can work on selected apparel fabrics, uniforms, cotton, polyester blends, hats, and fabric accessories. Coated, waterproof, leather, nylon, or heat-sensitive materials should be tested first before bulk production.

Our MOQ is flexible, but we usually recommend starting from 100 pieces because PVC patches involve mold costs and machine setup costs. For bulk orders, larger quantities usually offer better unit pricing.

Yes. Sample confirmation is recommended for iron-on PVC patch orders, especially when you need to test the fabric compatibility, adhesion, heat press result, and washing performance before mass production.

Standard production time is usually 10–14 days after artwork confirmation. Rush orders can usually be completed in 5–7 days, depending on the design, quantity, and production schedule. Express shipping usually takes 3–5 days.

Yes. Besides iron-on backing, we also offer Velcro backing, sew-on backing, adhesive backing, no backing, and other custom backing solutions depending on your usage, fabric, and application needs.
